In lakes and oceans, Diatoms are the basic food. We call it the “grass of the sea”. All higher forms of ocean life depend on it for their survival.

A diatom is a one-celled plant, so tiny that it must be magnified thousands of times to be visible. They live in such substantial quantities that they out-weigh the total of all land plants combined. Diatoms take the minerals out of the water and build a protective shell. As they die, the shells sift to the bottom of the water and form layers, sometimes hundreds of feet thick. These vast layers are called Diatomaceous Earth. Geological changes have placed some of these deposits on dry land.
